Kolkata: A popular bar-cum-restaurant, Olipub, located on Park Street, has issued a formal apology after mistakenly serving beef instead of mutton to YouTuber Sayak Chakraborty. Following the incident, Sayak withdrew his police complaint against the waiter involved.
The incident occurred on the evening of January 30, when Sayak visited Olipub with two friends and ordered a mutton steak. According to his complaint, he was served beef by mistake, which led to a heated exchange with the waiter and the restaurant manager. Sayak later shared a video of the incident on social media, which quickly went viral.
In an official statement released on Sunday, Olipub acknowledged the serious but unintentional error made by one of their waiters during service on January 30, 2026. The restaurant expressed sincere regret for the mistake and deeply apologised for inadvertently hurting the customer’s sentiments.
The statement further emphasised that Olipub is founded on the principles of respect for all individuals, regardless of caste, creed, religion, or gender. Proud of its 80-year legacy, the restaurant reaffirmed its commitment to treating all customers and staff with dignity and respect. Olipub also thanked well-wishers for their overwhelming support during this difficult time and assured continued delivery of their best service.
Following Sayak’s complaint, the Park Street police arrested waiter Sheikh Nasiruddin on charges of hurting religious sentiments under Section 295 of the Indian Penal Code. He was denied bail when produced before the court.
The situation escalated when Joyraj Bhattacharya from Howrah filed a counter-complaint against Sayak, accusing him of conspiring to spread communal disharmony.
Amid growing social media backlash over handling of the incident, Sayak announced the withdrawal of his complaint.
