New Delhi: On the eve of Republic Day, the Government of India announced the recipients of the prestigious Padma Awards, including Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The Ministry of Home Affairs released the list featuring 5 Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awardees. Among them, para high jumper Praveen Kumar has been honoured with the Padma Shri award.
Speaking on this occasion, Praveen Kumar expressed that he had been eagerly waiting for this recognition for a long time and now feels truly deserving of the Padma Shri honour. He said, “It was a long wait, and patience always bears sweet fruit. I have been striving for this for the past two and a half years, and receiving this award feels very rewarding. I have started getting congratulatory messages, though I have not yet seen the full list.”
Praveen Kumar made history by winning the gold medal in the men’s T64 high jump event at the Paris Paralympics, achieving a leap of 2.08 metres to secure first place. This was a memorable milestone in his career. Earlier, he won a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics and a gold medal at the Asian Para Games. Additionally, last year, he earned a bronze medal in the T64 high jump at the World Para Athletics Championships held in New Delhi.
The Padma Awards list released on Sunday also included renowned sportspersons like former Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma and Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who both received the Padma Shri. Tennis legend Vijay Amritraj was the sole recipient of the Padma Bhushan in the sports category this year. Amritraj was honoured for his long and illustrious career, having previously received the Arjuna Award in 1974 and the Padma Shri in 1983.
Other athletes recognised for their contributions to Indian sports include hockey goalkeeper Savita Punia, Baldev Singh, Bhagwandas Raikwar, and K. Pajanivel, all honoured for their significant roles in advancing Indian sports.
