Pallavi Joshi Opens Up About Pay Inequality in the Film Industry

Mumbai, June 22: Actress and producer Pallavi Joshi gained fame in the 80s and 90s for her remarkable performances. She has made a significant journey from television to the big screen through hard work. However, she faced the harsh reality of pay inequality during her career. Recently, Joshi spoke candidly about her experiences, revealing her struggles.

Pallavi Joshi stated, “In the 90s, when I was at the peak of my career, I still earned less than my male counterparts. At that time, I was one of the highest-paid actresses on television, yet my earnings were significantly lower compared to the male actors I worked with.”

She recounted a time when both she and actor Shekhar Suman appeared on a magazine cover together. “During that period, we were both considered the most popular and highest-paid artists on television. However, Shekhar Suman earned nearly double what I did,” she added.

Joshi emphasized that this anecdote highlights the industry’s treatment of female artists, who, despite equal work and popularity, were often paid less. “This disparity was a common issue in the industry back then,” she remarked.

Despite being recognized as one of the most successful and highest-paid actresses at the time, she acknowledged that her earnings were consistently lower than those of her male co-stars. “This experience was thought-provoking for me, and I accepted it silently, as such issues were rarely discussed openly during that era.”

Pallavi Joshi established a strong presence on Indian television in the 80s and 90s, featuring in several popular shows like ‘Mrignayani’, ‘Talash’, and ‘Aarohan’. During her conversation, she also mentioned Shekhar Suman, a hugely popular actor in the television industry at that time, known for hit shows like ‘Dekha Bhai Dekh’, ‘Wah Janab’, and ‘Movers and Shakers’. He is currently in the spotlight with his YouTube show ‘Shekhar Tonight’.
