Almora, August 13: The Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple, located at the confluence of the Shakuni and Farka rivers near the border of Almora and Nainital districts in Uttarakhand, is an ancient site of devotion for Shiva followers.
It is believed that Sage Kapil performed penance at this temple. Devotees travel from far and wide to seek blessings here. On Thursday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami shared his thoughts on the temple’s grandeur.
The Chief Minister posted a video of the temple on the social media platform X, stating, “Located about 12 kilometers from Almora, near the village of Simlti, the Kapileshwar Shiva Temple is considered one of Uttarakhand’s ancient temples. Built during the Katyuri era, this temple is renowned for its unique architectural style and spiritual ambiance. Special rituals and religious events take place during the holy month of Sawan, enhancing the temple’s devotional atmosphere. Be sure to visit this sacred site when in Almora district.”
Legend has it that Sage Kapil, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, undertook severe penance here, pleasing Lord Shiva, who then granted him a vision. The temple is believed to have been constructed around the 9th century during the reign of the Katyuri dynasty. Inside the sanctum, a naturally formed self-manifested Shivling can be found.
The temple structure leans slightly to one side, with intriguing local folklore tied to geological events and battles of the local Nagas.
The Kapileshwar Temple in Pithoragarh is located within a cave, offering views of the stunning Himalayan peaks. In contrast, the Almora temple is nestled in a serene environment at the confluence of the Shakuni and Farka rivers. A large number of devotees flock here during the Sawan month and Mahashivratri.
