San Diego, May 25: The San Diego Padres triumphed over the Oakland Athletics with a 2-0 win at Petco Park on Saturday, thanks to an impressive defensive performance by first baseman Ty France. His skills not only supported pitcher Lucas Giolito but also helped the Padres clinch another series victory, setting the stage for a potential sweep in Game 3 with Michael King on the mound.
The scoring began in the bottom of the third inning when Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Padres a 1-0 lead. Despite the pressure, San Diego could not extend their lead further in that inning.
France showcased his defensive prowess by executing an unassisted double play in the top of the third. After Carlos Cortes walked, Nick Kurtz hit a ground ball to France. He tagged Cortes, who was attempting to return to first base, and then stepped on the bag to complete the play. The Padres added another run in the same inning when France hit a ground ball through the infield, allowing Nick Castellanos to score from third.
In the fourth inning, France continued to shine defensively as the Athletics loaded the bases with one out. Jeff McNeil hit a ground ball to France, who initiated a double play by throwing to second base and then returning to first to catch the throw, ending the inning and the scoring threat.
The Athletics’ Darell Hernaiz began the fifth inning with a single, but France quickly turned the tide. He caught a line drive from Cortes down the first baseline, stepping on first base to double off Hernaiz, who couldn’t return in time.
In a fitting conclusion, France fielded a ground ball from McNeil and flipped it to closer Mason Miller, who covered first base for the final out. This play secured the Padres’ two-run victory and marked Miller’s 16th save of the season.
