Over 17 Lakh Applications Received in Gujarat SIR Ahead of Final Voter List

Gandhinagar, January 29 – According to official figures released on Thursday, more than 16.76 lakh applications have been submitted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral list in Gujarat. Of these, 6.88 lakh voters have applied to include their names, while 9.88 lakh have requested removal of names.

This revision process is being conducted as per the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India.

Officials stated that by January 28, a total of 6,88,116 Form 6 and 6A submissions were received across the state to add names to the final voter list. Meanwhile, 9,88,621 Form 7 applications were filed from various assembly constituencies seeking deletion of names.

Voters have been given time until January 30 to submit claims or objections regarding inclusion, deletion, or corrections in the voter list. Election authorities said that verification of claims and objections will be carried out simultaneously, and decisions will be made after proper field-level investigations.

The SIR campaign in Gujarat began on October 27 last year, covering all 182 assembly seats. Booth Level Officers conducted door-to-door verification to update voter records.

After completing the counting phase, the draft voter list was published on December 19 to initiate the public scrutiny process. Officials emphasized that the purpose of the SIR is to ensure eligible voters are not excluded and ineligible names are prevented from remaining on the list.

The Election Commission has consistently stated that this process aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of the voter list before elections. The revision includes first-time voters who have turned 18, as well as individuals who have changed their residence within or outside their constituencies.

Entries related to deceased voters, duplicate registrations, and those who have permanently migrated are also being identified for removal. Officials informed that once all claims and objections are verified and resolved, the final voter list will be published according to the prescribed schedule.
