Over 100,000 Women Employed in iPhone Factories: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Mumbai, March 16: Central Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative is empowering women. The electronic manufacturing sector is creating new job opportunities for women, with over 100,000 women employed in iPhone factories across the country.

Vaishnaw shared his insights on the social media platform X, stating, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative is empowering women. The electronics manufacturing sector is generating new employment opportunities for women.”

He further noted that in many factories, more than half of the workforce comprises women. Specifically, over 100,000 women are employed in iPhone factories, where they are proving their capabilities even in highly complex semiconductor plants.

Alongside his remarks, Vaishnaw shared an article detailing the job opportunities created for women due to the growth of iPhone manufacturing in India.

According to the article, Apple operates five iPhone factories in the country through Foxconn and Tata Electronics. During peak production cycles, these factories employ 140,000 workers, of which 100,000 are women, primarily aged between 19 and 24.

Most of these women are entering the workforce for the first time. Each employee undergoes a six-week training program before starting work. This training is provided free of charge by the company operating the plant, ensuring that employees understand all aspects of their roles before they join the assembly line.

Apple has increased production in India by approximately 53% in 2025, assembling around 5.5 million units, compared to 3.6 million units the previous year.

Reports indicate that Apple is producing about a quarter of its flagship products in India to avoid tariffs on Chinese goods in the United States. The report also highlights that Apple produces approximately 220-230 million iPhones globally each year, with India’s share rapidly increasing, thanks to incentives provided under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
