New Delhi, March 27: Following the central government’s decision to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per liter, opposition MPs have voiced their dissatisfaction. They argue that the tax relief should have been more substantial, a concern the government has seemingly overlooked.
Congress MP Manish Tewari addressed reporters, stating, “The government’s revenue comes from the public, collected through taxes. When the government cuts excise duty, it is not giving away its own money; rather, it is using funds collected from the people. Why does the government need to promote this cut so extensively?”
RJD MP Misa Bharti remarked that while there has been a slight reduction in prices, essential commodities like oil and LPG are still not sufficiently available. She noted, “Long queues are visible everywhere, whether it’s for LPG, petrol, or diesel.”
Bharti emphasized that the severe shortage of petrol, diesel, and LPG means the public is not experiencing any real benefit. The long lines at petrol stations and the lack of availability are significantly affecting the daily lives of ordinary citizens.
TMC MP Sagarika Ghosh also criticized the government, pointing out that for the past three weeks, it has claimed that the supply of oil and gas is adequate. However, now that the situation has become critical, the government has decided to lower excise duty. She stated, “This reflects the central government’s failure.” Ghosh expressed particular concern over the severe shortage of LPG, which is impacting small businesses, restaurants, laborers, students, and the elderly. She added, “Nothing was done earlier, and now that it has become an emergency, the government has finally acted. This clearly shows their failure. If the government had paid attention earlier, the country wouldn’t be facing such difficulties now.”
