Opposition MPs Criticize Governments Maneuvering Over Womens Reservation Bill

New Delhi, April 18: The failure to pass the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of attempting to seize power under the guise of women’s reservation. He emphasized that Congress is not anti-women and has long supported one-third reservation for women. Kharge noted that all parties had unanimously backed the women’s reservation law introduced in 2023.

Speaking to reporters, Kharge stated, “We supported the 2023 amendment unanimously and passed it. However, they introduced another amendment under its cover, adding a delimitation clause, thereby merging the women’s reservation and delimitation bills. By bringing these bills together, they aimed to gain power, allowing any delimitation law to be passed and altered in the House with a simple majority.”

He further insisted that such actions should be conducted within the framework of the 543-member assembly. “You can complete this after the next census or caste census, in time for the next elections. Their intention is to alter the constitutional framework and consolidate executive power,” he added.

Congress MP K.C. Venugopal remarked, “We already passed the Women’s Reservation Act of 2023 without any consensus. The government must take immediate action to implement the bill for the 2029 elections. Their agenda to link women’s reservation with delimitation has failed, as they want to manipulate delimitation to suit their convenience.”

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari questioned, “What do you call those who oppose democracy and attempt to come to power by opposing it? I can only say that democracy was upheld yesterday, and the Constitution of India was safeguarded.”

Congress MP Rajiv Shukla reiterated, “Congress is the strongest supporter of women’s reservation. This bill was unanimously passed with Congress’s backing in 2023. Just the day before yesterday, they issued a notification, planning to link women’s reservation with delimitation.”

Purnia MP Pappu Yadav stated that the bill was passed unanimously in 2023 with Congress’s support. He criticized the timing of the session being called again during elections, calling it inappropriate. “To date, there has not been a single female judge in the Supreme Court. There is rampant exploitation of women, yet these people remain silent. The BJP is engaging in such acts to mislead the public. The respect for women is diminishing significantly,” he asserted.

Samajwadi Party MP Anand Bhadauria expressed, “The Samajwadi Party, along with our leader, stands firmly in favor of women’s reservation. The House passed women’s reservation unanimously in 2023, and now they are bringing a constitutional amendment based on the 2011 census, which is part of their conspiracy.”
