New Delhi, April 20: Delhi government minister Pravesh Verma has responded to the Supreme Court’s decision stating that the same judge will continue hearing the case against Arvind Kejriwal in the High Court. He remarked that questioning a judge in the courtroom appears to be an attempt by Kejriwal to create a negative perception of the judiciary.
In an interview, Verma welcomed the court’s decision, suggesting it was expected from Kejriwal to challenge the integrity of the judiciary. He stated, “The person who questions the army and makes false claims about children now wants to undermine the entire system by questioning our judiciary.”
Verma emphasized that the court has made it clear that an accused cannot dictate which judge will hear their case. He added, “Before any scrutiny, a judge should remember they are not the accused; they are the one deciding whether the petitioner is guilty or not. Imagine if all petitioners decided who would hear their cases; what would happen to our judicial system? Does Kejriwal expect the court to ask him which judge he prefers?”
He pointed out the inconsistency in Kejriwal’s appeal, which claims the lower court’s decision was correct and the judge was honest, yet now questions the integrity of the High Court judge based on a prior event. “If the High Court rules in Kejriwal’s favor, he will call the judge honest; if not, he will claim bias due to ideological connections,” Verma stated.
Verma further accused Kejriwal of knowing his wrongdoings, particularly in the liquor scam involving massive bribes. “He is afraid. After the lower court’s decision, he was seeking public sympathy, now he questions the High Court judges. Will Kejriwal decide which judges should hear his case? I expect him, as a responsible citizen, to participate in this legal process, present his evidence, and trust the judicial system while awaiting the verdict.”
