Lucknow, August 18: Leaders of the India Alliance have reacted to U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks supporting the “Save America Act,” which referenced India’s electoral system. The Congress and Samajwadi Party have raised concerns about the credibility of the Election Commission, suggesting that the government is attempting to validate it through foreign leaders’ statements.
Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput stated during a conversation that there is significant criticism surrounding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He questioned whether the government is now seeking assistance from abroad, given the prominence of Trump’s statement in the media.
Rajput remarked, “India’s Election Commission used to function excellently. It received global praise until Gyanesh Kumar became the Chief Election Commissioner and the BJP came to power.”
He accused the Election Commission of being under suspicion. “Now, by relying on Trump’s statement, the government is trying to dispel that doubt. This is quite shameful,” he added.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma sarcastically noted that Gyanesh Kumar should have asked Trump how elections could be conducted on such a large scale in the U.S. without photo identification. “The question is misplaced. Instead, he should have asked why democracy in your country has not been attacked and why questions are not raised about it,” Verma stated.
He further criticized Kumar for discussing photo IDs and voter IDs in the U.S. while failing to acknowledge that 80 percent of people in India question these practices. “In a democracy, there should not be one-sided dialogue. Democracy is alive in America, and we can see that. They still conduct elections using ballot papers,” Verma concluded.
