Opposition Alliance Accuses Election Commission of Bias Towards BJP

New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : In New Delhi, the leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Akhilesh Yadav, raised serious concerns about the integrity of the Election Commission ahead of a planned protest march by the opposition alliance. He accused the Commission of not operating fairly and suggested that it appears to favor the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Speaking to reporters, Yadav stated, “Complaints about the Election Commission’s functioning are not new. It seems the Commission believes that only BJP members are Indian citizens. On multiple occasions, it has appeared that the Commission thinks only BJP members are entitled to vote.”

Yadav further claimed that the BJP has exploited financial resources to influence the electoral process, stating that the public has long viewed the party as an “election machine.” He emphasized that the BJP does not solely rely on the electoral process to win elections but also possesses significant financial backing.

He noted that complaints about the Election Commission have intensified since the BJP came to power, alleging that its operations now appear to serve the interests of the ruling party. Yadav also pointed to incidents of booth capturing in West Bengal, asserting that such occurrences are not limited to that state, as similar situations have been observed in Uttar Pradesh.

The SP leader accused the BJP of electoral fraud in the assembly elections of Kundarki and Meerapur, while also questioning the legitimacy of by-elections in Ayodhya and Ambedkar Nagar.

Yadav insisted that the Election Commission must operate impartially as mandated by the Constitution. He expressed concern that since the BJP assumed power, the Commission’s demeanor has shifted to favor the ruling party.

Additionally, he criticized the BJP’s proposal for “One Nation, One Election,” suggesting that it aims not only to enhance administrative efficiency but may also be a strategy to manipulate the electoral system. He warned that if electoral fraud occurs once, it could eliminate the need for repeated investigations over the next five years, posing a serious threat to democracy. “The public will not accept such a system,” he said.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee made pointed remarks against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, labeling him a “vote thief” and calling for his resignation. Banerjee alleged that the BJP won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections through vote theft and has similarly triumphed in Haryana, Maharashtra, Bihar, and West Bengal by exploiting irregularities in the electoral process.

In contrast, Ladakh MP Mohammad Hanifa clarified that he would not participate in the opposition march. He mentioned he was in Delhi for a meeting with the Union Home Minister and would return to Ladakh afterward, which prevented his involvement in the protest against the Election Commission.
