Amaravati, July 19: The Omicron RF.5 variant of COVID-19 has been identified in Andhra Pradesh through genomic sequencing of positive samples. Four samples were tested at a virology laboratory in Pune.
State Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav announced that genomic sequencing of the four COVID-19 positive samples from Kadapa district confirmed the presence of the Omicron RF.5 variant. The samples were sent to the Pune laboratory, and results have now been received.
Following the report, the minister held a telephonic meeting with senior health officials to discuss the sequencing results and the current COVID-19 situation in the state. Subsequently, a statement was released by the health department.
Dr. Vishnuvardhan, Director of Medical Education (DME), stated that there is no need for public concern, but advised people to remain vigilant and follow basic precautions.
He explained that Omicron RF.5 is one of several sub-lineages of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant. The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring it under regular genomic surveillance. Dr. Vishnuvardhan noted that cases of RF.5 have been reported in Singapore and several other Southeast Asian countries.
According to current scientific evidence, there is no indication that RF.5 is more dangerous than other Omicron sub-lineages. Therefore, there is no need for panic.
RF.5 is a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It has naturally evolved through branches of the JN.1 lineage and LF.7 PY.1.1.1, and is not a recombinant variant. The WHO continues to monitor it under its regular genomic surveillance program.
Dr. Vishnuvardhan mentioned that the symptoms of RF.5 are similar to those of other Omicron subtypes, including sore throat, cough, fever, headache, runny or blocked nose, fatigue, and body aches.
Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav stated that COVID-19 cases in Andhra Pradesh are sporadic, and the government is fully prepared to handle the situation.
He added that special wards and beds for COVID-19 are being established in teaching hospitals, along with ensuring the availability of testing kits and other necessary medical infrastructure for identifying and treating COVID-19 cases. So far, a total of 16 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the state, with 12 cases recorded by July 16.
