New Delhi, September 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken stock of the flood situation in Varanasi by speaking with Mayor Ashok Tiwari and Collector Satyendra Kumar. He instructed officials to ensure minimal inconvenience for citizens.
The Prime Minister also assessed the facilities available at relief camps for those affected by the floods. He directed that all necessary provisions be made available to flood victims immediately. Modi emphasized the need for prompt arrangements for additional relief materials if required. He has ordered continuous monitoring of flood and relief operations to ensure effective assistance.
As the Member of Parliament for the Varanasi constituency, PM Modi maintains regular communication with local administration regarding ongoing activities in the city.
Earlier on Wednesday, the water level of the Ganges River rose above the warning mark. The district administration halted boat operations and increased surveillance in flood-affected areas. According to data from the Central Water Commission, the Ganges water level in Varanasi was recorded at 70.29 meters, surpassing the warning level of 70.26 meters. This rise has heightened concerns for residents living in low-lying areas and near the ghats.
The danger level for the Ganges in Varanasi is set at 71.26 meters, while the highest recorded flood level to date is 73.90 meters.
In light of the current flood conditions, the administration has suspended boat operations on the Ganges as a precaution. Officials have urged devotees, local residents, and tourists to avoid approaching the ghats and to stay away from areas with strong currents.
