Srinagar, August 22: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah honored the NEET toppers from the region and inaugurated a government school online. During the event, he emphasized the need for excellence in education, the development of infrastructure in government institutions, and providing better opportunities for youth. Abdullah also mentioned a garden created under the theme ‘Waste to Wonder’ and discussed its potential for environmental conservation and tourism.
Abdullah stated that the initiative by the floriculture department aims to convey the message that old items can be reused creatively. He pointed out that various decorations in the garden include items like old tractors, scooters, jeeps, Ambassador cars, and even old refrigerators, which are repurposed for planting and decoration. He urged people to consider recycling before discarding items.
He provided an example, suggesting that if someone knows they need to buy groceries, they can take a reusable bag from home. This practice reduces the need to take new plastic bags from stores and subsequently throw them away.
Abdullah remarked that the new gardens in Jammu and Kashmir could play a significant role in enhancing tourism. He referred to the Chrysanthemum Garden, which had only one season last year, and is set for its second season this year. Learning from past experiences, improvements will be made to the garden. He cited the Tulip Garden in Srinagar, which started small but has grown into a major tourist attraction with added features like new levels, fountains, and water channels over time.
The Chief Minister suggested that both the Chrysanthemum Garden and the ‘Waste to Wonder’ garden could be developed in phases. He advised officials from the floriculture department to visit Chandigarh to study the waste-based gardens there, believing that incorporating some of their features could significantly enhance tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.
When asked about Rahul Gandhi‘s protests, Abdullah remarked that if the opposition leader does not fulfill his role, what purpose does he serve? He stated that the opposition leader’s job is to hold the government accountable, which is precisely what Gandhi is doing. Abdullah also noted that different opposition leaders should not be treated differently. While Jammu and Kashmir’s opposition leaders face no scrutiny for opposing the government, Gandhi’s protests are frequently questioned. He encouraged Gandhi to continue fulfilling his role in the opposition.
