New Delhi, March 19: India is set to host the World Athletics Indoor Championship for the first time in 2028. On Thursday, the World Athletics Council awarded India the rights to host this prestigious event. Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Chara Majhi expressed his happiness, calling it a “milestone.”
CM Majhi took to the social media platform X, stating, “We have reached the global stage. The world is ready to witness the sports passion of Odisha. We are immensely proud to announce that Odisha will host the World Athletics Indoor Championship 2028. With this edition in Odisha, the prestigious event returns to India after 22 years. This milestone reflects our emergence as a global sports hub and our unwavering commitment to world-class excellence.”
He added, “We are eager to welcome athletes and fans from around the world and showcase our organizational capabilities and Indian hospitality. We extend heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continuous guidance and support in strengthening our sports ecosystem.”
During a meeting of the World Athletics Council in Torun, Poland, India was awarded the hosting rights for the 2028 edition of the World Athletics Indoor Championship. Torun is also hosting the 2026 edition from March 20 to 22. In January, members of the World Athletics Council visited the Kalinga Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar and were impressed by its facilities.
The President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Bahadur Singh Sagoo, confirmed, “India will host the World Athletics Indoor Championship 2028 in Bhubaneswar. This global competition will take place at the Kalinga Indoor Stadium.”
Sagoo noted that Odisha has become a major hub for track and field sports in the country. In addition to hosting domestic competitions, the state is also organizing international events.
