Bhubaneswar, June 18: Following directives from Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi, a high-level committee was established on Thursday to investigate serious errors found in school textbooks for grades 1 to 8.
According to the Chief Minister’s office, the committee will be chaired by Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Devaranjan Kumar Singh. It includes Vijay Ketan Upadhyay, Secretary of the Department of Odia Language, Literature and Culture, and Smita Pani, Deputy Secretary of the Department of General Administration and Public Grievances.
The committee will examine the printing errors in the textbooks and determine at what level these mistakes occurred. It will also identify the officials or institutions responsible for the negligence. The committee has been instructed to complete its investigation and submit a report within seven days.
Reports indicate that the errors in textbooks for grades 1 to 8 are affecting students’ learning. The Chief Minister took this matter seriously and reviewed it on Wednesday.
During the review meeting, he directed that all mistakes be corrected immediately and strict action be taken against those responsible. The meeting included School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond, Chief Secretary Anu Garg, and senior officials from various departments participating virtually.
Chief Minister Majhi expressed concern over the issue, emphasizing the need to maintain the highest standards of accuracy and quality in educational materials. He instructed officials to rectify all identified errors without delay.
According to reports, approximately 1,678 errors have been found in the new textbooks prepared for grades 1 to 8 under the Odisha Curriculum 2025 by the State Council of Educational Research and Training, Odisha.
The majority of errors, totaling 705, were found in the grade 8 textbooks. This includes 294 errors in the ‘Jigyasa’ book, 114 in Sanskrit, 25 in Social Science, and 31 in Literature. Significant errors have also been identified in the English and Mathematics textbooks.
