India Enhances Maritime Rescue Preparedness with SAREX-2026 Launch

New Delhi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : India is ramping up its maritime rescue capabilities to better protect lives at sea. On October 7, Defense Minister of State Sanjay Seth inaugurated the multinational search and rescue exercise ‘SAREX-2026’. This multi-agency initiative aims to test collaborative responses during crises, enhance international cooperation, and strengthen rescue operations.

During the event, Seth highlighted the spirit of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” urging all nations and agencies to work together to safeguard life at sea. He referenced the motto of the Indian Coast Guard, “Vayam Rakshamah,” meaning “We Protect.”

Prior to SAREX-2026, the 24th National Maritime Search and Rescue Board meeting took place on the same day, chaired by the Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, Paramesh Shivmani. This meeting reviewed preparations for India’s vast maritime search and rescue area, which spans approximately 4.6 million square kilometers. Discussions focused on better technology utilization, prompt handling of distress signals, vessel monitoring, real-time information sharing, and improved coordination among various agencies.

Seth emphasized that maritime safety is a collective responsibility involving the Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, coastal police, ports, civil agencies, and the maritime transport sector. He noted that collaboration with international and regional partners is crucial for enhancing maritime security.

The Minister also acknowledged advancements in India’s satellite-based search and rescue capabilities, commending the Indian Space Research Organisation and associated teams. He stressed the importance of timely action in saving lives at sea, stating that every second counts. Therefore, it is essential to make India’s search and rescue system faster, more accurate, and robust in the future.

Seth reiterated that the goal of a developed India by 2047 encompasses not only economic and technological strength but also becoming a secure and resilient maritime nation. During the meeting, the National Maritime Search and Rescue Awards 2026 were presented, recognizing exceptional efforts in saving lives at sea.
