Seoul, March 29: North Korea has successfully conducted a test of its ‘Super Power’ missile. As usual, the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, was present to oversee the upgraded rocket engine’s ground test. State media reported on Sunday that this marks another significant step in the nation’s weapon program.
Defense experts believe that North Korea plans to use its solid-fuel rocket engine for launching intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), which could potentially reach the United States. These engines facilitate rapid missile launches, requiring minimal preparation before ignition.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the latest test was part of a “five-year national defense development plan,” although they did not provide specific details about the test date or location. Kim stated that North Korea’s defense capabilities are entering a “major transformation phase” in building its strategic forces. This test is deemed “extremely necessary” to enhance the country’s military strength.
This test follows a high-thrust solid-fuel engine test conducted last September. The previous engine generated a maximum thrust of 1,971 kilonewtons, while this new engine boasts a capacity of 2,500 kilonewtons, providing significantly more thrust.
The test occurred shortly after Kim’s speech, in which he referred to North Korea as an “irreversible” nuclear power. He accused the United States of promoting “global terrorism and aggression,” claiming that achieving nuclear capability was a justified action.
North Korea continues to modernize its ICBM technology. Solid-fuel missiles are particularly notable for their lower interception probability, as they do not require the extensive preparation time that liquid-fueled missiles do.
On March 29, 2026, KCNA released a photo from an undisclosed location in North Korea, clearly showing the solid-fuel rocket engine test. Another image depicted flames erupting from the ground-mounted engine, illuminating the surrounding test site with an orange glow.
These missiles are claimed to be capable of reaching the United States and can carry multiple warheads. Multi-warhead missiles can strike several targets in a single launch, potentially overwhelming defense systems through various re-entry vehicles that deceive the enemy. Pyongyang last tested an ICBM in October 2024.
In a separate KCNA report, Kim also visited a special forces training base, where he reviewed preparations, with images showing soldiers wielding axes and sledges.
