North Korea and Russia Celebrate New Bridge Over Tumeng River, Boosting Trade Relations

Seoul, April 21: North Korea and Russia held a ceremony on Tuesday to celebrate the completion of a cross-border road bridge over the Tumeng River. According to the Russian embassy in North Korea, the bridge is expected to be fully operational by mid-June.

As reported by the Yonhap News Agency, construction of the bridge began last April, following a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang in June 2024.

The ceremony took place in the border area, where officials marked the bridge’s connection. Russian Transport Minister Andrey Sergeyevich Nikitin and Natural Resources Minister Alexander Kozlov participated online. Kozlov also leads the bilateral committee for trade and economic cooperation on behalf of Russia.

The embassy confirmed that the bridge will be completed by June 19.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that the bridge symbolizes the strengthening of friendship with North Korea and reflects a desire to enhance cooperation between the two nations. She also noted that it would increase mutual dialogue and exchanges.

Currently, there is only one rail bridge over the Tumeng River between North Korea and Russia. The new road bridge will enhance connectivity between the two countries. This development comes at a time when relations between North Korea and Russia are deepening, particularly as North Korea has sent troops to assist Russia in its war in Ukraine.

According to the Russian embassy, last September, North Korea’s Ministry of Public Security and Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs signed an agreement to enhance cooperation in law enforcement and public safety.

Ministers from both countries have also agreed on the need to increase collaboration in border areas. This growing cooperation and the construction of the road bridge will facilitate easier movement and potentially boost trade between the two nations.
