India-South Korea Summit: A New Direction for Strategic Partnership with Key Agreements

New Delhi, April 20: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung visited India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a bilateral meeting at Hyderabad House on Monday. This marks the third meeting between the two leaders, following their previous encounters at the G7 Summit in 2025 and the G20 Summit in 2025.

During President Lee’s state visit, several significant agreements, joint statements, and announcements were made to enhance bilateral relations between India and the Republic of Korea.

The two nations presented a joint strategic vision aimed at strengthening their special strategic partnership. They reached a comprehensive agreement in the fields of shipbuilding, shipping, and maritime logistics. Joint statements were also issued on crucial areas such as sustainability and energy resource security, outlining the direction for future cooperation.

Subsequently, multiple memoranda of understanding (MOUs) and frameworks were established to increase collaboration across various sectors. Key topics included port development, the establishment of an industrial cooperation committee, technology and trade in the steel supply chain, and collaboration among small and medium enterprises. Additionally, formal agreements were made regarding maritime heritage, science and technology, climate and environment, and cooperation under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement.

In the digital sector, the establishment of the “India-Korea Digital Bridge” was announced, along with agreements between institutions under financial cooperation. Cultural exchange programs for 2026-2030, collaboration in creative industries and sports were also promoted, alongside the announcement to resume talks to enhance the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Finally, both countries made several important announcements aimed at strengthening bilateral and global cooperation. They initiated an economic security dialogue, established a Distinguished Visitor Program (DVP), and decided to start discussions on global issues such as climate change, Arctic matters, and maritime cooperation.

The Republic of Korea announced its participation in the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative and the International Solar Alliance, while India agreed to join the Global Green Development Institute. Furthermore, the year 2028-29 will be celebrated as the India-Korea Friendship Year, further solidifying cultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
