New Delhi, Sept 24 (Udaipur Kiran News): Nokia has extended its licensing agreement with HMD Global for several more years, ensuring the continuation of Nokia-branded feature phones even though the company has exited the smartphone segment.

A PTI report revealed that while HMD Global will not sell Nokia smartphones going forward, it will continue producing and marketing Nokia feature phones. Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the extension pushes the deal beyond its original 2026 expiry. Neither Nokia nor HMD has issued an official statement yet.
India: The Core Market
India remains Nokia’s largest feature phone market, both in terms of domestic demand and exports. HMD manufactures Nokia devices in India and China, with India serving as the primary hub.
According to IDC data, HMD commands a 22.4% market share by volume and 30.7% by value in India’s feature phone segment. Nearly 54 million feature phones were shipped across the country in 2024, underscoring continued strong demand.
Strategic Importance
For Nokia, the extension helps maintain global brand relevance in a category it once dominated. For HMD, it secures brand strength in both rural and urban markets, where the Nokia name continues to resonate with consumers.
Industry sources added that HMD is also planning to diversify with HMD-branded smartphones, tablets, and potential partnerships, aiming to reduce reliance on Nokia while leveraging its legacy.
