Patna, March 28: Political activity in Bihar is intensifying. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to resign from the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30, and he may step down from his chief ministerial position anytime after April 13. Sources close to the Chief Minister’s residence have confirmed this information.
Nitish Kumar, currently a member of the Bihar Legislative Council, secured a victory in the Rajya Sabha elections held on March 16. According to regulations, he must resign from the state legislature within 14 days of being elected to Parliament. If he is no longer a member of the state assembly or council, he will also need to resign from the chief minister’s role.
During his ‘Samriddhi Yatra,’ which concluded on March 26 in Patna, the Chief Minister did not mention anything regarding his Rajya Sabha membership or his potential resignation from the chief ministerial post. Throughout the journey, he addressed public gatherings in 32 districts but made no reference to resigning or moving to the Rajya Sabha. However, he did file his nomination for the recently concluded Rajya Sabha elections and was elected as a member of the upper house for the first time.
Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar stated, “It is reported that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will resign on April 30. After that, he will take his Rajya Sabha membership.”
Regarding the discussions about Nitish Kumar’s resignation from the MLC position, Bihar government minister Ashok Chaudhary remarked, “His departure from the house will be felt across Bihar. This decision is his (Nitish Kumar’s) based on time and circumstances. We do not want him to go to Delhi, but in politics, circumstances dictate decisions. Whether he remains a member of the house or not is not the issue; what matters is how effective he is for the state.”
