New Delhi, June 25: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has directed officials to enhance preparations for the monsoon season on national highway projects. He emphasized the need for precautionary measures to minimize disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), these directives were issued during review meetings assessing the quality, maintenance, and progress of ongoing national highway projects in Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The projects under review include 4,931 kilometers in Telangana, 2,035 kilometers in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and 804 kilometers in Ladakh.
The ministry’s review was based on media reports, feedback from social media platforms, and information gathered from officials, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and project contractors.
During the meetings, Gadkari reviewed ongoing projects, maintenance efforts, and the steps being taken to ensure safe, sustainable, and effective highway infrastructure. He stressed the importance of accelerating project implementation while maintaining the highest standards of quality and accountability.
Gadkari instructed officials and implementation agencies to strengthen monitoring systems, ensure timely project completion, and adopt modern construction techniques and better work practices. He noted that these measures would enhance road durability, travel convenience, and the long-term performance of highways.
In light of potential challenges during the monsoon, the minister urged officials to prioritize effective drainage management, slope stabilization, and safety measures. He also emphasized the need to deploy a rapid response system to handle weather-related emergencies.
According to the minister, these steps are crucial for ensuring uninterrupted traffic, road safety, and the robustness of infrastructure on the national highway network. Gadkari highlighted that well-developed and maintained roads play a significant role in enhancing regional connectivity, boosting economic growth, promoting tourism, and improving passenger convenience.
He reiterated that timely project completion, quality assurance, and the adoption of modern engineering solutions are among the top priorities in the road sector.
