Beijing, February 20: Chinese speed skater Ning Chongyan made history on Thursday at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. He clinched the gold medal in the men’s 1,500-meter speed skating event, finishing with a time of 1 minute 41.98 seconds, breaking the Olympic record in the process.

This victory marks China‘s first Olympic gold medal in this event. With this win, China has now secured three gold medals in these games, achieving a remarkable milestone.

Previously, Ning had won bronze medals in both the 1,000-meter and team pursuit events. After his gold medal performance in the 1,500 meters, he expressed that it was the most spectacular race of his career. He referred to it as a gift to his country on the third day of the Chinese New Year. Ning stated that four years of hard work and struggle had finally paid off, and he felt immense happiness.

Following the match, Ning’s Dutch coach remarked on the challenging nature of the competition. He noted that they anticipated a fast start from rival Nuis, so they devised a strategy for Ning to remain calm initially, build speed in the second lap, and push hard in the final lap. The coach praised Ning for executing the plan flawlessly, leading to a stunning victory.
