NIA Takes Over Investigation of Manipur Blasts; Security Tightened in Bishnupur

Imphal: The Manipur government has handed over the investigation of two consecutive blasts in Bishnupur district to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The blasts, which injured two people including a woman, took place recently, an official said on Tuesday.

A police officer stated that the case related to the twin explosions on Monday, caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs), has been entrusted to the NIA for a thorough probe.

Senior police officials, including the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bishnupur district, visited the blast sites to assess the situation.

Search operations continued on Tuesday in the surrounding areas for the second consecutive day to apprehend those responsible for the blasts.

Security forces have been deployed in additional numbers around the blast locations to prevent any escalation of violence. Investigations and operations to identify and capture the perpetrators are ongoing, the officer added.

On Monday, an IED exploded inside an abandoned house in Ngaukong village under the Fougakchao Ikhai police station area. Since ethnic violence began in Manipur in May 2023, the family of the house has been living in a relief camp at Keibul Lamjao.

According to police, after the first blast, when villagers gathered at the site, a second explosion occurred about 200 metres away. Two people, identified as Soibam Sanatonba Singh (52) and Nonthobam Indubala Devi (37), were injured by shrapnel and admitted to a government hospital.

Immediately following the blasts, security forces led by senior police officers launched a search operation to apprehend those responsible.

Reports indicate that an angry mob damaged a temporary security bunker nearby and accused security personnel of failing to prevent the blasts and arrest the culprits.

Central and state security agencies continue large-scale operations against terrorists, including search drives and area domination efforts in border districts, mixed population zones, and sensitive locations.
