New Delhi, May 27: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of reports regarding nearly 60 students falling ill after consuming midday meals at a government school in Nalanda district, Bihar.
According to media reports, the incident occurred on May 21, when students began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea after their lunch. The affected students were admitted to various nearby hospitals for treatment.
Reports indicate that the food was served to students without being tasted by teachers, leading to several students becoming ill. A teacher who later consumed the meal also fell sick and required hospitalization.
This recent incident has raised concerns once again about food safety and hygiene standards in government schools under Bihar’s midday meal scheme.
Previously, in February 2025, at least 60 students from Shri Chandpur Primary School in the Harnaut block of Nalanda also fell ill after lunch, with many complaining of abdominal pain and vomiting.
In another incident earlier this month, over 250 children at a government school in Saharsa district fell ill after their midday meal, reporting symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting, and dizziness, leading to their admission to local health centers.
Officials later stated that all affected students are in stable condition, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the suspected food contamination.
The NHRC has the authority to take suo motu cognizance based on media reports, public information, or other sources, even without receiving a formal complaint regarding human rights violations.
