New Delhi, February 16: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi) and the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University. They are accused of failing to protect a female journalist and content creator who was violently attacked while covering a protest on the university’s North Campus.
The NHRC bench, led by member Priyank Kanungo, took cognizance of a complaint alleging that the journalist was assaulted by a mob during a demonstration supporting the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday.
According to the complaint, the attackers allegedly targeted the journalist based on her caste identity, verbally abused her, physically assaulted her, threatened her with violence, and attempted to undermine her dignity.
The complainant stated that this incident represents caste-based violence, an attack on press freedom, and a serious violation of her fundamental rights to life, dignity, and personal security.
The complainant has urged the NHRC to intervene, calling for a fair investigation into the incident, action against the perpetrators, adequate security measures for the victim, and provisions for legal assistance and compensation.
Recognizing that the allegations, if true, indicate a violation of the victim’s human rights, the apex human rights body has taken cognizance of the case under Section 12 of the Human Rights Protection Act, 1993.
The NHRC has directed the DCP (North Delhi) and the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University to investigate the allegations and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within two weeks for NHRC’s review.
