Chandigarh, March 24: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged protests on Monday at district headquarters across Punjab, demanding that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) take over the investigation against former minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Laljeet Singh Bhullar.
During the protests, state BJP president Sunil Jakhar led a demonstration in Patiala, where an effigy of Bhullar was burned.
Speaking to reporters, Jakhar stated that Bhullar’s arrest followed indications from Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the case could be handed over to the CBI. He attributed the arrest to pressure created by the BJP’s movement on this issue.
Jakhar alleged that the state government is reluctant to transfer the case to the CBI because doing so would reveal numerous cases linked to AAP leaders, including where funds amassed by ministers like Bhullar were being sent.
He recalled that in a previous incident, suspended police officer Harcharan Singh Bhullar was arrested by the CBI in October 2025, and at that time, the Punjab government had made efforts to prevent the central agency from taking over the investigation.
Jakhar asserted that the current delay in the arrest is motivated by the same intent to obstruct justice.
However, he emphasized that the BJP will not allow this to happen and will continue its struggle alongside the victim’s family until justice is served.
The state BJP president demanded a CBI investigation into the case and called for a swift hearing to ensure that the guilty are punished promptly and the victim’s family receives justice.
He further accused the state government of attempting to suppress the case and exerting pressure on the victim’s family.
The suicide of a warehouse officer has sparked significant controversy, and Home Minister Shah has proposed a CBI investigation following a written request from all MPs of the state.
