NHA and IIT Kanpur Join Hands to Boost ‘Made in India’ Digital Health

Kanpur: A significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the National Health Authority (NHA) and IIT Kanpur to promote the safe and reliable use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare sector. As part of this collaboration, IIT Kanpur hosted a digital health workshop focused on advancing AI applications under the ‘Made in India’ model.

Developing a Trusted AI Benchmarking Platform

Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO of the National Health Authority, explained that the primary aim of the workshop was to create an open benchmarking platform for testing AI models. This platform will ensure that AI technologies used in healthcare are not only developed but also verified for authenticity and effectiveness, building trust among doctors and hospitals.

He pointed out that while developing AI models has become easier, many rely on limited data sets. In a diverse country like India, the accuracy of these models cannot be ensured without extensive testing. To address this, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has adopted a federated data architecture, allowing AI testing with patient consent and privacy, without centralizing data.

Building a Verified Digital Health Ecosystem

Dr. Barnwal highlighted three key pillars of the mission: the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID for citizens, the Health Facility Registry for hospitals, and the Health Professional Registry for doctors. Together, these components form a verified digital health ecosystem.

Additionally, the Health Claims Exchange is being enhanced to make insurance processes more transparent, enabling fair and accurate premium assessments.

State-Level Progress and Future Commitments

Bihar has emerged as a role model by implementing digital health records in all government hospitals under the Chief Minister’s digital health scheme. This initiative aims to allow citizens access to their medical records and treatment history of the past ten years with just a click.

Representing the Government of Uttar Pradesh, Ritu Maheshwari expressed commitment to rapidly adopt digital health infrastructure in the state. She shared that under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, an AI mission with a budget of Rs 2,000 crore has been announced for Uttar Pradesh. This mission marks a progressive step towards integrating AI across various sectors, including healthcare.

Ms. Maheshwari also mentioned a recent two-day AI in Health conference organized in the state, which featured both national and global experts. The AI mission announcement was made alongside this conference, demonstrating the state’s dedication to advancing digital health innovations.
