Guwahati, April 22: Officials reported that the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has conducted a comprehensive review of its ongoing safety initiatives and infrastructure preparations, particularly in anticipation of the four-month monsoon season from June to September.
NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Kapinjhal Kishore Sharma, stated that General Manager Chetan Kumar Srivastava inspected the Barabari (along the Assam-Mizoram border)–Badarpur and Badarpur–Patharkhola sections under the Lumding division.
This inspection is part of a broader effort to assess safety measures and review infrastructure readiness ahead of the monsoon season. Sharma further explained that during this visit, a detailed ‘window-trailing’ inspection was conducted to evaluate the fitness of the railway tracks and the structural integrity of these sections.
According to the NFR’s CPRO, this exercise plays a crucial role in identifying potential vulnerabilities and ensuring the resilience of railway infrastructure against monsoon-related challenges such as flooding, soil erosion, and track instability.
The General Manager also reviewed key safety standards and instructed officials to maintain strict oversight and ensure timely maintenance work.
During this occasion, the General Manager visited the newly constructed sub-divisional training center in Badarpur and an ‘Ultrasonic Flaw Detection’ laboratory.
Sharma noted that these facilities are designed to enhance the technical capabilities of railway personnel and improve the efficiency of track inspection and fault detection systems.
These initiatives reflect NFR’s commitment to capacity building and underscore its efforts to adopt advanced technologies for ensuring safe and reliable rail operations.
He also inspected Badarpur railway station and reviewed the progress of ongoing development works there.
This inspection holds additional significance in the context of a strategically important railway connectivity project that stretches from Barabari in southern Assam to Sairang, near Aizawl in Mizoram.
Launched in 2025, this rail link has significantly improved regional connectivity and contributed to the economic integration of Mizoram with the rest of the country.
The introduction of railway connectivity to Sairang has provided a substantial boost to tourism and the state’s economy.
Ensuring the safety and stability of the existing sections to Barabari remains critical, as they serve as a lifeline in this expanded rail network.
Every monsoon season, railway infrastructure is affected, disrupting rail connectivity between various states in the Northeast.
On September 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38-kilometer-long Barabari–Sairang new railway line, marking the first time Aizawl has been included on India’s rail map.
