Guwahati, April 28: Officials announced on Tuesday that the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) has implemented a series of strategic preparations to ensure safe and uninterrupted rail operations during the four-month monsoon season, from June to September.
Kapinjol Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, stated that due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall, landslides, and flooding in the region, permanent watchmen have been strategically deployed at sensitive locations. This is to continuously monitor track conditions and issue immediate alerts in case of any threats.
He further explained that areas prone to landslides and flooding have been fortified by strengthening embankments, improving drainage systems, and clearing natural water flow channels.
To monitor water levels in real-time, measuring instruments have been installed at critical locations, especially in hilly areas.
To ensure a quick response during emergencies, NFR has deployed relief materials such as stones, sandbags, and wire mesh at key locations.
The official added that ‘Emergency on Wheels’ trains are fully equipped and staffed with technical personnel and essential equipment to respond promptly to any situation.
Quick response teams have also been formed across all divisions to address incidents like landslides, track washouts, and flooding with minimal delays.
According to the Chief Public Relations Officer, these teams are trained to restore normal operations swiftly and minimize disruptions to passenger and freight services.
As part of the 2026 monsoon preparations, all departments have strategically stocked adequate materials.
In the Lumding division, approximately 10,000 to 12,000 cubic meters of boulders and 2,000 to 3,000 cubic meters of sand quarry dust, along with over 40,000 cement bags, are available. The Tinsukia division has around 400 to 600 cubic meters of boulders, 100 to 150 cubic meters of sand quarry dust, and over 7,000 cement bags.
The Rangiya division has stockpiled about 6,000 to 8,000 cubic meters of boulders and over 1,000 cubic meters of sand quarry dust, along with more than 5,000 cement bags.
The Alipurduar division has over 20,000 cubic meters of large stones and other significant materials, while the Katihar division has about 3,000 to 5,000 cubic meters of large stones, 800 to 1,200 cubic meters of sand quarry dust, and over 20,000 cement bags.
Overall, all departments have sufficient stock available, and minor deficiencies are being addressed to ensure complete preparedness for the monsoon season.
Additionally, various capacities of winch crabs, jacks, tirfors, and tripods are available in all departments to ensure readiness for rescue or recovery operations.
Moreover, the North East Frontier Railway is collaborating with the India Meteorological Department to receive real-time weather alerts and forecasts.
This coordination aids railway control rooms, which operate 24/7, in making proactive decisions regarding train movements and ground deployments.
Passengers are advised to stay updated through official communication channels and cooperate with railway officials.
Sharma emphasized that with these comprehensive measures, the North East Frontier Railway is fully committed to ensuring safety, operational efficiency, and passenger convenience during the monsoon season.
Every monsoon season, the railway infrastructure faces disruptions, affecting rail connectivity between various states in the North East.
