New Teacher Allocation Standards Introduced for Grades 6 to 8 in Bihar

Patna, June 23: A new system for teacher allocation for grades 6 to 8 has been implemented in Bihar’s primary schools. The education department has established new standards for the number of teachers and subject-specific requirements for upper primary classes. Under this system, at least one teacher will be mandatory for each class, with different teachers assigned based on subjects.

According to directives from the Directorate of Primary Education, separate teachers will be provided for subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Languages for students in grades 6 to 8. This initiative is in line with the provisions of the Right to Education Act (RTE Act), 2009, and the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.

The new teacher allocation standards ensure that a minimum of one teacher is available in each class. Additionally, provisions have been made for appointing extra teachers as student numbers increase. If a school has between 105 and 140 students, an additional English teacher will be appointed. For schools with 140 to 175 students, another extra teacher will be provided based on the needs for subjects like Sanskrit or Urdu. If the student count exceeds 175, further teachers will be allocated as necessary.

The education department clarified that grades 1 to 5 and grades 6 to 8 will be considered separate educational units for teacher allocation. However, under administrative arrangements, the principal’s position will remain the same for primary schools covering grades 1 to 8.

A review by the department revealed that many schools in the state do not have the minimum number of teachers as per the established standards. Keeping this in mind, the new system will allocate teachers based on actual enrollment numbers, class structures, and subject needs.

Vikram Virkar, the Director of Primary Education, has issued a letter instructing all district officials and district education officers to act according to the new standards. The letter emphasizes the need to ensure teacher availability to strengthen the quality of education.

The Secretary of the Education Department has approved these new teacher allocation standards, and assessments of teacher needs in the state’s primary schools will now be conducted accordingly.
