Kolkata, 18 August (Kiran News): The low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal has now strengthened and is turning into a deep depression. According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, this low pressure developed near the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast, eastwards, around 8:30 am on Sunday. By Monday, it reached close to West Bengal.

Meteorologists have stated that by Tuesday, this system will intensify further and enter the land near the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border. Although this deep depression will not directly impact Bengal, the moisture and clouds arising from it will reach the districts of South Bengal. As a result, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain in several districts till Thursday.
The weather department has also indicated the possibility of another cyclonic circulation forming over the northern part of the Bay of Bengal after this low-pressure system, which could increase rainfall towards the end of the week.
While South Bengal saw record-breaking rainfall in July, the rainfall in August has remained very low so far. From August 1 to 17, Kolkata has recorded only 152 mm of rainfall, compared to the normal average of 372.1 mm. This means the city has received only 41 percent of the average rainfall so far.
According to weather experts, the current low-pressure system will not be able to compensate for this shortfall, but the likely cyclonic rains at the weekend could reduce the deficit to some extent.
Meteorologist Ravindra Goenka said that it is not the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh low pressure but the cyclonic circulation at the weekend that could bring more rain to South Bengal, with a possibility of heavy rainfall in several areas.
According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, on Monday, rain with thunder and wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are expected in South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia, and Jhargram. On Tuesday, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely in 15 districts of South Bengal. On Wednesday, the intensity of rain is expected to increase in Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Howrah, East and West Midnapore, and Jhargram.
The weather department has issued a warning of heavy rain in various districts of South Bengal on August 22 and 23. On August 22, there is a risk of heavy rainfall in Murshidabad, Nadia, East Bardhaman, and North and South 24 Parganas. On August 23, heavy rainfall is expected in North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, and several areas of Bankura.
