Kolkata, 18 August (Kiran News): Controversy over filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s upcoming movie ‘The Bengal Files’ has deepened further. Santanu Mukherjee, the grandson of freedom fighter Gopal Mukherjee alias Gopal Patha, has filed a new FIR alleging that the film misrepresents his grandfather’s character.

On Monday, Santanu Mukherjee stated that his grandfather has been depicted as a ‘butcher’ in the film, which is contrary to historical facts. He alleged that the character of Gopal Mukherjee was included in the movie without the family’s permission. Santanu clarified that his grandfather was a member of the Anushilan Samiti, an expert wrestler, and had taken up arms during the 1946 riots to protect people from Muslim League violence. Though he owned two butcher shops, calling him a ‘butcher’ is incorrect.
Earlier, FIRs were also filed against the film in July at Murshidabad district and Lake Town police station in Kolkata. The complaint alleged that the movie may contain sensitive scenes which could affect communal harmony in the state.
On 31 July, Vivek Agnihotri and his wife and actress Pallavi Joshi filed a petition before a single bench of the Calcutta High Court seeking quashing of these FIRs. On 4 August, Justice Jay Sengupta’s bench granted an interim stay on these FIRs.
‘The Bengal Files’ is considered the third part of Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘Files’ trilogy. Earlier, ‘The Tashkent Files’ was released in 2019 and the controversial ‘The Kashmir Files’ in 2022. The Mamata Banerjee government has previously faced allegations of imposing bans on films.
