Jerusalem, February 8: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to travel to Washington on Wednesday. He will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States.
Netanyahu’s office released a statement indicating that the two leaders will address the current talks with Iran. The statement emphasized that Netanyahu believes the discussions must include conditions to halt ballistic missile development and to end Iran’s support for its allied groups.
This announcement comes as indirect talks between representatives from Iran and the U.S. took place in Oman on Friday. Trump described these discussions as very positive, noting that Iran appears willing to negotiate.
According to Xinhua News Agency, this marks the first round of talks between the two nations since Israel’s attack on Iran last June. That attack led to a 12-day conflict, during which the U.S. bombed key Iranian nuclear facilities.
The last meeting between Trump and Netanyahu occurred in December, and there has been no immediate response from the White House regarding this upcoming discussion.
The indirect talks held in Oman on Friday suggest that discussions about Tehran’s nuclear program have returned to an initial stage. Trump characterized the talks as very good and mentioned plans for further discussions early next week.
Previously, Trump has threatened military action if Iran does not reach an agreement regarding its nuclear program. Meanwhile, following nationwide protests in Iran that resulted in thousands of deaths, the U.S. has deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and other warships to the region.
