Nepal Launches Online Vehicle Registration and Fee Payment for Foreign Tourists

Kathmandu, May 5: The Nepalese government has introduced a new online service that allows foreign tourists arriving by land to register their vehicles and pay fees digitally. This initiative aims to enhance convenience for travelers from India and other countries who journey to Nepal by road.

Finance Minister Swarnim Wagale launched the system, implemented by the Customs Department. Now, Indian tourists and other foreign travelers can register their vehicles online from the comfort of their homes and pay the necessary fees.

Previously, such vehicles had to obtain a temporary permit at the border customs. Additionally, travelers needed to visit the customs office again during their stay to renew the permit, risking fines for late renewals. The new online system simplifies this process, making travel easier.

While launching the service, Minister Wagale stated that this system will help tourists avoid hassles at the border. He emphasized, “This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to good governance and better public service. We want to ensure that tourists face no difficulties and receive prompt, quality service.”

Shyam Prasad Mainali, Director General of the Customs Department, explained that the permit system for foreign tourist vehicles in Nepal is now fully digital. Travelers can fill in their vehicle information online, making the process more transparent and user-friendly.

Tourist vehicles can pay the required fees online or at bank counters. Those who opt for online payment will receive a QR code via email, which can be presented at the border for entry into Nepal.

According to the department, vehicles with a QR code can travel without any issues. If the permit expires, travelers can extend it online while still in Nepal.

To use this service, users must visit the Customs Department’s website, select the “Our Services” section, and choose the “TIV” module to fill in their information. After completing the process, a QR code will be issued for fee payment and entry.

The department noted that the Temporary Import of Vehicle (TIV) module has been developed under Nepal’s National Single Window System to facilitate easier entry for foreign travelers.
