New Delhi, 22 December. Another incident of election-related violence has emerged from Bangladesh. Following the announcement of election dates, political violence and murder cases have seen a fresh update linked to the National Citizen Party (NCP). The party leader was shot by assailants in broad daylight in Khulna.
According to Bangladeshi media outlet The Daily Star, Motaleb Sikdar, NCP’s Khulna division chief and central organiser of the workers’ force, was shot around 11:45 AM on Monday in the Sonadanga area of the city.
Dhaka Tribune cited hospital sources stating that Sikdar was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Animesh Mandal of Sonadanga Model Police Station said that the leader was shot by miscreants and local residents rescued him and rushed him to the hospital. Police reached the spot after receiving information.
Bangladeshi media reported that doctors confirmed to the OC that Motaleb Sikdar is out of danger. The bullet entered near one ear, pierced through the skin, and exited from the other side. The OC added that more information will be shared after the investigation proceeds.
This attack comes just 10 days after the shooting of Usman Hadi, spokesperson of Iqbal Mancha and independent candidate from Dhaka-8. On 12 December 2025, bike-riding assailants shot Hadi in the head. He was initially admitted to Evercare Hospital and later flown to Singapore for advanced treatment due to his critical condition.
Hadi passed away in the hospital during treatment in Singapore. Since his assassination, Bangladesh has been engulfed in violent unrest. Extremist rioters have triggered violence in various parts of the country. The perpetrators behind Hadi’s killing remain unidentified, causing anger and frustration among his supporters due to the lack of arrests.
