New Delhi, June 12: The Election Commission of India (ECI) hosted a one-day national conference aimed at media and communication officials. The event focused on enhancing effective communication during the electoral process and facilitating the exchange of experiences and best practices among officials.
Participants included media nodal officers (MNOs) and social media nodal officers (SMNOs) from all 36 states and union territories. District media nodal officers and district public relations officers from regions undergoing a special intensive revision or facing upcoming elections also attended.
More than 350 officials participated in the program. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioner Dr. Sukbir Singh Sandhu, and Dr. Vivek Joshi addressed the attendees. In his speech, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar highlighted that voter participation in the recent elections across five states reached the highest levels since independence. He urged officials to ensure that all information reaching the public is timely, straightforward, and entirely based on facts and laws.
Election Commissioner Dr. Sukbir Singh Sandhu emphasized that the evaluation of any communication process should not be limited to merely providing information but should also consider its impact.
Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Dr. Vivek Joshi underscored the crucial role of officials in making the ECI’s rules, instructions, and guidelines accessible and understandable to the general public.
The conference featured in-depth discussions on various phases of the electoral process, including communication strategies for voter list revision, voting procedures, the ECI Net platform, constitutional provisions, electoral laws, and recent Supreme Court rulings. Practical sessions were held on preparing press notes, disseminating information through media and social media, addressing misinformation, raising awareness among young voters, and communicating the ECI’s initiatives to the public.
At the conclusion of the event, a question-and-answer session was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, where officials shared their experiences and sought guidance on various topics. The Election Commission believes that such conferences play a vital role in making electoral communication systems more effective.
