New York, March 21: Baseball is evolving rapidly in 2026, marked by the introduction of robot umpires, the Tampa Bay Rays’ return to Tropicana Field, and a multitude of networks broadcasting games. This season could be pivotal, potentially the last before a labor shutdown.
Since the Los Angeles Dodgers triumphed in World Series Game 7 against Toronto, becoming the first team to win back-to-back championships since the 1998-2000 New York Yankees, much has changed.
The usual free-agent shuffle saw Kyle Tucker join the Dodgers, Bo Bichette land with the New York Mets, Alex Bregman move to the Chicago Cubs, and Pete Alonso sign with the Baltimore Orioles. Additionally, Venezuela celebrated its first World Baseball Classic championship, achieving record attendance and viewership.
However, overshadowing the excitement of opening day on Wednesday is the looming threat of a season without games next year. Tony Clark has resigned as head of the players’ association, with Bruce Meyer stepping in amid discussions about a potential management salary cap that the players’ association intends to contest. A lockout of players by Major League Baseball is anticipated on December 2, casting uncertainty over the 2027 season.
Cy Young Award winners Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal are part of the eight-member executive subcommittee guiding collective bargaining negotiations. “We need individuals who are invested and respected within the game to negotiate confidently with the owners,” Skenes stated. “I didn’t seek this role, but when nominated, it’s hard to decline.”
Introducing Robot Umpires
After testing in the minor leagues since 2019, MLB decided last September to implement the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) during the regular season. While human umpires will call every pitch, each team can challenge two calls per game, retaining the challenge if successful, with the option for at least one more in extra innings.
“You want to correct the egregiously wrong calls and ensure accuracy in crucial moments,” said three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander. Notably, ABS will not be used during select games, including a two-game series between Arizona and San Diego in Mexico City on April 25-26.
Television Broadcasts: A Complex Landscape
The regular-season national broadcasts are now divided among various networks, including Fox/FS1, TBS, ESPN, NBC/Peacock, AppleTV, and Netflix. NBC will take over the Wild Card Series from ABC/ESPN.
Additionally, MLB will manage and distribute local broadcasts for 14 teams due to financial issues faced by Main Street Sports Group, which operates regional FanDuel Sports Network stations. The season opener featuring the New York Yankees against the San Francisco Giants will be available exclusively on Netflix.
Dodgers Aim for a Three-Peat
The Dodgers, after becoming the first team to win consecutive championships since the Yankees, are now aiming to become only the fifth team to secure three titles in a row. They join the ranks of the Yankees and the Oakland Athletics.
“When you’re a Dodger, everyone wants to beat you,” manager Dave Roberts told his players during spring training. “This will be our toughest challenge yet, and we must push ourselves harder. We already have the talent; there’s no better team than this one.”
Shohei Ohtani, coming off his fourth unanimous MVP award, is expected to play both as a pitcher and a hitter this season after returning from elbow surgery.
Back at Tropicana Field
The Tampa Bay Rays are back at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg after a season spent playing at Steinbrenner Field. Repairs from Hurricane Milton, which damaged the Trop in October 2024, have been completed. Last year, the Rays had a disappointing 41-40 record at Steinbrenner, their lowest home winning percentage since 2016.
“There’s genuine excitement to return to the Trop,” said manager Kevin Cash. “We’ve had great success there, and the improvements made will enhance our experience.”
Milestone Watch
This season, four players are on track to reach 400 career home runs: Manny Machado (369), Freddie Freeman (368), Aaron Judge (367), and Bryce Harper (363).
