Mizoram Implements New Government Work Model Amid Global Fuel Crisis

Aizawl, May 20: The Mizoram government has announced several temporary measures to address the ongoing crisis in West Asia and the rising fuel prices worldwide. These steps aim to conserve fuel and stabilize the economy. Key initiatives include a work-from-home policy for government employees, changes in office hours, and a ban on official travel.

According to a memorandum issued by the General Administration Department, these measures were adopted following the Prime Minister’s appeal for fuel conservation and economic prudence. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have significantly impacted global oil and gas supply. The government noted that India imports over 85% of its crude oil, making the country vulnerable to international supply disruptions and price hikes.

Under the new guidelines, 20% of employees in each government department will work from home. However, exemptions are made for departments related to medical and emergency services, water and electricity supply, transportation, disaster relief, and law enforcement. Departments are instructed to prepare duty rosters to ensure uninterrupted public services.

Additionally, the government has adjusted office hours in Aizawl to reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption. One group of departments will operate from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, while another will work from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

A significant initiative is the observance of “No Government Vehicle Day” every Wednesday. This aims to encourage government employees to walk or use public transport. The memorandum also emphasizes increased use of video conferencing, reducing the size of VIP convoys, banning official travel to foreign countries and other states, and implementing energy-saving measures in government offices.

The state government has advised departments to minimize expenses on formal events and hospitality during this period. Officials stated that these measures are temporary and intended to support national efforts to mitigate the economic impact of the ongoing global crisis.

An additional note clarified that these measures will take effect from May 21.
