Mumbai, March 13: Separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the closure of the doors of Jamia Masjid in Srinagar. He stated that on this final Friday of Ramadan, thousands of people typically gather here for prayers and supplications, but the mosque’s doors have been shut, which is extremely unfortunate.
In a post on social media platform X, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq noted that once again, the doors of the mosque are completely closed on this significant day when many come together for prayers. This marks the seventh consecutive year that local authorities have denied permission for congregational prayers at Jamia Masjid.
He drew a comparison between this situation and the actions of Israel, which has been known to close the doors of Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan. He wrote that just as Israel forcibly closed the doors of Al-Aqsa during Ramadan, a similar reality is being witnessed here.
Mirwaiz expressed that witnessing such actions brings tears to one’s heart. He lamented that it is shameful for anyone to close the doors of Allah’s house, depriving people of their religious duties and worship. He emphasized that closing the doors of a place of worship not only attacks individual faith but also undermines the religious freedom and beliefs of the entire community. He described the current situation as profoundly distressing for Muslims, both mentally and spiritually.
Jamia Masjid is a magnificent example of Indian and Mughal architecture. Its design was created by British architects and is known as “Indo-Saracenic architecture.” Notably, it does not feature a single dome, which is common in most mosques, and it bears some resemblance to Buddhist religious sites. The mosque measures 384 feet in length and 38 feet in width, accommodating up to 33,000 worshippers at once. The main prayer hall, supported by 370 pillars made from thick cedar trunks, is a remarkable sight.
