Michael Owen Calls Barcelona’s Pursuit of Harry Kane a ‘Waste of Money’

Former England striker Michael Owen has cautioned Barcelona against signing Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane, describing such a move as a financial misstep despite Kane’s undeniable talent.

Owen, who also played for Real Madrid during his career, expressed surprise at the rumours linking Kane with the Catalan club. Speaking to Goal, he acknowledged Kane’s continued excellence but questioned the long-term benefits of acquiring the English striker at this point in his career.

“The problem with Harry Kane is that, although he is still an incredible player, signing him is a waste of money,” Owen said. “You’re signing him now, but how many years do you get for that? One, two, three, four? I don’t know.”

He added, “Obviously, he’s not showing any signs of ageing, but paying these amounts for a few years of performance seems incredible to me.”

Owen further remarked that Kane should have remained in the Premier League, believing the striker had more to offer in English football. “I would have loved him to stay in the Premier League. I felt he had all the cards and gave them away for a very low price. I said that at the time too,” he stated.

Regarding the transfer rumours, Kane has recently dismissed speculation of a summer exit from Bayern Munich. The forward has no plans to activate his €65 million release clause and is already engaged in talks for a contract extension with the German club.

Although Kane explored options recently and held discussions with Barcelona about potentially replacing Robert Lewandowski in the future, he now appears committed to continuing his career in the Bundesliga.
