Barcelona, August 28: FC Barcelona kicked off the 2026/27 La Liga season with an impressive victory. After winning their first match, they defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-0 at Camp Nou in their second encounter.
Raphinha scored the first goal in the 37th minute, followed by Fermín López, who netted the second in the 82nd minute, playing crucial roles in the team’s success. Athletic Bilbao struggled to make an impact, failing to register a single shot on target.
Lamine Yamal appeared more dangerous than in their previous match, testing Bilbao’s goalkeeper Unai Simón just 15 minutes in. Despite Barcelona’s dominance in possession, they needed a brilliant move from Pedri to set up Raphinha, who finished with style.
Simón made several outstanding saves in the second half, but he couldn’t prevent Barcelona’s second goal. López capitalized on a mistake by Spanish defender Aymeric Laporte, scoring his third goal of the season and extending Barcelona’s lead to 2-0.
In another match on Thursday, Celta Vigo started strong, with Iago Aspas scoring first against Osasuna. Celta controlled the ball in the first half, but the match shifted after defender Marcos Alonso received a red card following a VAR review. Just three minutes later, Kike Barja took advantage of Celta’s weak defense to equalize. Osasuna then earned a penalty due to a handball in Celta’s box, which Ante Budimir converted to give his team the lead.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1 at home. Jude Bellingham assisted Vinícius Júnior for another goal. This victory for Barcelona came just hours after confirming a four-year deal with Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković from Fenerbahçe.
It remains uncertain whether the 31-year-old will play for Barcelona’s first team this season or be loaned to another club. Dinamo Zagreb is considered a potential option for the player who arrived in the city on Tuesday. Barcelona views him as a long-term replacement for the 36-year-old Wojciech Szczęsny.
Additionally, Barcelona confirmed that 19-year-old full-back Javi Espart has been included in the first team this season after impressing in pre-season matches.
