Lucknow, August 14: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) National President Mayawati has expressed her outrage over the purification ritual conducted after Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge’s event in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. She described the incident as highly condemnable and concerning, calling for strict legal action against those responsible.
In a post on ‘X’ on Friday, Mayawati stated, “Recently, after the program of Congress Party’s National President Mallikarjun Kharge in Haldwani, a purification ritual was performed due to his Dalit identity. This information was also shared in Parliament yesterday. This matter is extremely condemnable and worrisome.”
She further urged the Uttarakhand government to take immediate action against such casteist and feudal elements, demanding they be imprisoned under stringent laws. Mayawati also emphasized that the leadership of the RSS should take this matter seriously, especially as they have been discussing depriving economically empowered Dalits of reservations.
The issue of the alleged purification ritual, which took place after Kharge’s rally on August 8 at Ramleela Maidan in Haldwani, has reached Parliament. Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge, raised concerns about the incident, stating that such behavior based on social or caste identity is a serious concern for democracy.
He questioned whether such actions on a public platform could be considered an example of upholding constitutional and democratic values, without naming any religion or community.
Mayawati also expressed her concern over the recent attack on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal in Nanded, Maharashtra. She remarked, “The recent attack on Sukhbir Singh Badal in Nanded, Maharashtra, is also very unfortunate and concerning. The central and Maharashtra governments must take this incident seriously and ensure strict legal action against the culprits.”
The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh labeled both incidents as serious and demanded that the respective governments ensure harsh action against those responsible.
