Varanasi, July 21: On the second Monday of the auspicious Hindu month of Sawan, the sacred city of Varanasi transformed into a spiritual haven, echoing with chants of Har Har Mahadev and Bam Bam Bhole. A sea of saffron-clad devotees flooded the premises of the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, performing rituals and seeking blessings of Lord Shiva during one of the most spiritually significant days of the year.
This special occasion coincided with Kamika Ekadashi, Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga, and Gauri Yoga, amplifying the spiritual fervor. Devotees from across the country arrived in massive numbers, beginning their pilgrimage with a dip in the holy Ganga at Dashashwamedh Ghat before carrying water in pots to perform Jalabhishek on the Jyotirlinga.

Spiritual Festivities Begin with Mangala Aarti at Dawn
The day commenced with a grand Mangala Aarti at 3:30 AM, accompanied by Vedic chants and elaborate floral decorations of the Jyotirlinga. As the temple doors opened, waves of devotees began entering in meticulously managed queues to offer prayers. Despite walking barefoot in hot, humid conditions, the unwavering spirit of the pilgrims was evident as they patiently waited for their turn to receive divine blessings.
Massive Arrangements to Manage the Crowd
To ensure a safe and smooth experience for devotees, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust and district administration implemented extensive arrangements:
-
Four separate entry points were opened to control footfall.
-
Digital darshan and 24-hour medical support were made available.
-
VIP and fast-track darshan tickets were suspended for the day.
-
Zigzag barricading helped maintain organized queues throughout the temple complex.
-
Petal showers were organized by temple officials at dawn to welcome pilgrims.
Security was tightened around the premises, and traffic diversions were in place to facilitate smooth access. Volunteers from civil defense, social organizations, and political parties, including BJP and Samajwadi Party workers, set up assistance camps for the convenience of the devotees.
Entire City Immersed in Devotion
Beyond the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, other prominent Shiva temples in Varanasi witnessed similar fervor. Thousands thronged temples such as Mahāmṛtyunjaya, Shooltankeshwar, Tilbhandeshwar, Gauri Kedareshwar, Trilochan, Rameshwar, Karmadeshwar, Sarangnath, and Gautameshwar Mahadev, performing Abhishekam rituals and singing devotional hymns.
Devotees Flock to Markandeya Mahadev Dham
A significant crowd was also reported at Markandeya Mahadev Dham in Chaubepur-Kaithi, where devotees stood in kilometer-long queues since Sunday evening. Local administration set up barricades and stopped all vehicular movement three kilometers ahead at Kaithi Tiraha. After bathing at the Ganga-Gomti confluence, pilgrims walked on foot to the shrine for darshan and jalabhishek.
