Guwahati, April 18: Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi asserted on Saturday that his party will soon form a government in Assam. He stated that once in power, an investigation will be initiated against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Gogoi informed reporters that their government would be established by May 4. He further emphasized that an inquiry into Sarma’s actions would commence following the government formation.
These remarks come amid a recent controversy between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress leader Pawan Khera, which has become one of the most talked-about political issues in Assam.
The dispute began earlier this month when Khera alleged during a press conference that Sarma’s wife, Riniki Sarma, possesses multiple foreign passports and has undisclosed assets abroad, including properties in Dubai and business ties in the United States.
He claimed that she holds passports from countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Antigua and Barbuda, and Egypt, raising questions about legitimacy and disclosure standards.
These allegations sparked a fierce political backlash. Sarma and his wife categorically denied the claims, labeling them as malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated.
The Chief Minister accused Congress of running a misinformation campaign and warned of stringent legal action against Khera, including a defamation suit.
The controversy quickly escalated into a legal battle. An FIR was filed against Khera in Assam based on Riniki Sarma’s complaint, prompting police action and searches related to the case.
Initially, Khera secured anticipatory bail from the Telangana High Court, but the matter escalated to the Supreme Court after Assam police challenged it.
In a significant development, the Supreme Court denied Khera protection from arrest and directed him to approach the appropriate court in Assam.
Following this, Sarma publicly stated that Khera should surrender before the authorities in Guwahati and face the legal process.
This issue has transformed into a major political controversy, with Congress standing firm on its allegations while the Bharatiya Janata Party dismisses them as baseless and defamatory.
The dispute has not only heated the political atmosphere in Assam but has also intertwined legal actions with electoral rhetoric, making it a central topic in the current political discourse.
