Mumbai, February 26: Manmohan Desai, a legendary director in Hindi cinema, made a significant impact during the rapidly changing landscape of the 70s and 80s. His films were a blend of action, emotion, comedy, and family reunions, which led to his enduring success at the box office. He is renowned for achieving an impressive record of seven Silver Jubilee and four Golden Jubilee films, a remarkable feat in the industry.

Born on February 26, 1937, in Mumbai, Desai faced hardship early in life. His father, Kikubhai Desai, was a film producer who started his own studio. However, he passed away when Manmohan was just four years old, leaving the family in substantial debt that forced them to sell their home and land. This struggle influenced his films, where themes of family separation and reunion became central.

His older brother, Subhash Desai, helped him enter the film industry, where he began as an assistant director. His first major film, “Chhalia,” featured Raj Kapoor and Nutan and was a success, with popular songs like “Baje Payal Chhun Chhun” and “Teri Raahon Mein Khade Hain.” This film established his unique identity in cinema.

Desai went on to create numerous hit films, but 1977 marked the pinnacle of his career. That year, he released four films: “Amar Akbar Anthony,” “Dharam Veer,” “Chacha Bhatija,” and “Parvarish.” All four were massive hits, with “Amar Akbar Anthony” making history by celebrating Silver Jubilee in multiple theaters and being regarded as a classic today.

In that era, a Silver Jubilee indicated a film’s run of 25 weeks in theaters, while a Golden Jubilee meant 50 weeks. Desai’s record of seven Silver Jubilee and four Golden Jubilee films remains unmatched.

Despite his professional success, Desai faced personal challenges, including the loss of his wife, which deeply affected him. He later became engaged to actress Nanda, but tragically passed away on March 1, 1994, after falling from his balcony in Mumbai.
