Manchester City’s Defensive Duo Faces Uncertain Future

Manchester City began the 2025-26 season with Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, John Stones, and Nathan Ake as their four senior centre-backs under Pep Guardiola. Dias and Gvardiol have been the preferred partnership in defence throughout the season, while Ake and Stones were expected to provide backup when needed. However, injuries to Dias and Gvardiol tested this plan. Ideally, Stones and Ake would have stepped up, but Stones is currently sidelined with injury, and Ake is struggling with fitness concerns of his own.

Given the ongoing fitness challenges faced by Stones and Ake, it appears their futures at Manchester City are uncertain. Both have played important roles in the club’s recent success, but persistent fitness issues might lead to their departures in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Pep Guardiola Signals End of Stones’ Manchester City Chapter

Before the recent draw against Brighton, Pep Guardiola hinted strongly about John Stones’ future at Manchester City. Stones’ contract expires at the end of this season, and due to his recurring injuries, it seems unlikely he will receive a contract renewal. Guardiola remarked, as reported by CityXtra, “I think what happened in the last two seasons will be defined in a decision at the end of the season.”

This statement suggests a likely conclusion to Stones’ time at the club. Despite being a key figure during Manchester City’s successful years, his ongoing injury struggles have limited his contributions. As a result, offering him a new deal does not seem probable at this stage.

Nathan Ake’s Situation Mirrors That of Stones

Nathan Ake’s role this season has primarily been as a squad player, featuring mostly in Carabao Cup matches, occasional Champions League appearances, or as a substitute. While dependable, Ake has also faced fitness problems over recent seasons. This season, he has not appeared fully fit, raising concerns about his long-term availability.

Given the current injury crisis in City’s defence, the club might retain Ake during the January transfer window. However, if a new centre-back is signed, Ake could be among the players to depart at the end of the season after his valuable service to the club.

Looking Ahead

John Stones and Nathan Ake have both been integral to Manchester City’s achievements in recent years. Yet, as they advance in age, their persistent fitness issues have cast doubt over their futures at the club. It seems likely that both defenders, who have contributed significantly, may leave Manchester City by the summer transfer window.
