Mumbai: Renowned music composer AR Rahman has recently come under scrutiny for his controversial ‘communal’ remarks, sparking reactions from various political figures, entertainment personalities, and spiritual leaders.
Former actress and spiritual leader Mamta Kulkarni responded to the debate, highlighting changes in the music industry and society. She stated, “Every era has its own time and patience is less among the youth today. Music is now becoming like the younger generation. In earlier times, everyone worked together. Now, even music directors have started eating popcorn.” She suggested that AR Rahman should feel fortunate that she chooses to perform and select songs in the current environment.
Recalling an incident from her time in Dubai, Mamta mentioned that she did not watch films as she was focused on meditation. When a Christian woman referred to the film ‘Kaminey,’ Mamta remarked on the title’s nature, implying the songs might reflect that tone. She added that now her life is more like “curd and buttermilk,” indicating a spiritual transformation.

In her conversation, she expressed concern over the growing religious discrimination in Bollywood. “I consider myself lucky to have worked in the 90s when we were all united. Aamir Khan would come to my house and we never considered religion then. What has changed now? There is discrimination in Bollywood, with people questioning whether Aamir is Muslim or Hindu. This must stop. An artist is just an artist; no distinctions should be made,” she emphasized.
